Facebook Doesn’t Compete With Google Plus

Facebook Doesn't Compete With Google Plus

I was talking with a friend that just joined Google Plus and told him Facebook Doesn’t Compete With Google Plus. He was disappointed and this is the final thought I had about Google+ and how it works. It seemed interesting so I decided I would post it.

Google Plus competes with Twitter

Google+ is more about live content and search-ability. I don’t think this is a direct competitor to Facebook. They just let everyone believe that they are trying to compete with Facebook to try and get people to join.

If you are interested in what I mean, try a test like typing something into the search bar from your Google+ page like “economics” or “car reviews” (no quotes needed) and you can see all the trending topics relating to economics and cars…. Most people don’t even realize that Google+ does this.

Also, the content on G+ can be searchable without having a login to G+. That creates a great opportunity to spread your content to a live audience by a simple comment on trending content.

Google Plus competes with LinkedIn

I would actually say that G+ is a cross between Twitter and LinkedIn. It has a similar feel to Twitter’s live content, if you are in the search bar and it is more like LinkedIn when you post personal or business content on your about pages.

It’s not so much about re-connecting as it is about new connections. I might even say its about “topical” connections. Thought leaders in your area of interest that you might be interested in.

#1 Follow others – nobody will know you exist until you follow them. You can stop following them later if their Tweets are annoying or off-color

#2 Follow Back – etiquette says that if someone follows you on Twitter you should follow back. This mayTweets are unique not happen with the Twitter Whales of the world like @dooce and @theonion but that is because they can’t and wouldn’t be able to reply to all the direct messages that would be coming to them. (You can only DM somone that is following you back.)

#3 Follow more people a day until you are following 2000 people – Don’t follow more than 200 people per day because Twitter requires a percentage of followers to follow you back. If people don’t #followback Twitter assumes your activity may be suspicious (or spam) and may shut off your account.

#4 UnFollow people who don’t follow back – you may consider unfollowing someone that doesn’t follow back until you get about 2000 followers. This will give you a better chance to have other folow you that will follow back.

#5 Follow people that RT, retweet others– this will guarantee that you have a following that will spread word and market your business if you are twittering for marketing purposes

#6 Follow in your geographic area – if you are a local business it is great to follow other local businesses, so search Twitter for cities or county’s close to your service area.

#7 Follow a Twitter Whale – If you know a large business that has a large Twitter following and you would want similar customers you may want to follow the people that follow them to gain access to their viewers.

#8 Try auto follow software – to make life easier following a lot of Twitterers you may consider using software to help automatically followback.

#9 Use may try software that DM’s people automatically like social oomph after they follow you.

#10 Create a nice DM for all your new followers and include a link that will take them to your website or an article of yours

#11 Use a tool like Tweet Deck or Hoot Suite to follow what is happening on Twitter and find more interesting people to follow.

#12 Create Twitter lists – Twitter lists are a great way to follow a lot of people instead of looking at your Twitter Feed. Organize who you are following into groups and get more useful information.

Step-by Step Build a Business with Twitter

Step-by Step Build a Business with Twitter

December 18th, 2009 in Starting a New WebsiteTwitter by Mark

Day 1 When you first start a Twitter account, unless you have done a lot of reading, you probably don’t know what to do or what to say to get followers using Twitter. In my experience building a Twitter followers list isn’t too hard if you follow a few simple guidelines and don’t break Twitters rules. Twitter does have rules that you will want to follow and take warning now, if you go overboard Twitter can shut down your account and delete your followers. But this is not something to panic about unless you plan on spamming your new followers.

If you plan on building a followers list quickly here are a few things to consider before you start going crazy with Twitter.

Tip #1  Make your Tweets informative

First of all, when you open your account you will need to Twitter on your account first before you start following. It is good to get about 20 tweets out there to let people know what kind of things you will be twittering about. A good tweet from a newbie is usually retweeting other people that you like or possibly sending out links to popular articles on the web or articles of your own if you will be writing articles and posting on the web.

Tip #2 Make them short

Twitter gives you 140 characters to write a tweet and that’s not much. I will say make sure you write your tweet in 120 characters or less. Remember, people will be reading these on their phones and at work. They don’t have time to try and understand what you are trying to say. You are only writing headlines for a link.

Tip #3 Know your audience

If you are building your follower list be focused. You will want to RT (retweet) articles that focus on your audience. If you sell IT, send out usefull articles and tips that would interest your clients or peers. ANd it never hurts to e intersting and funny.

Tip #4 Remember, this is just SEO

When you are building a list it is like everything else you do for SEO. It’s not rocket science. Take a little and effort to get a good follower list that is focused on your market. It will give you credibility and it will also give your readers a list of valuable followers to follow.

Bottom line, get a list built. Don’t do it too quickly and when you have questions on what to do next consider reading the article on Tips to Get Twollowers.
